VOLT powered by DECAF

Inspiration

Car sharing services are predicted to grow more than 34% until 2024 and by then we are talking about an USD 16.5B market. We evaluated various services and not a single car sharing service today really connects to you. You enter the car, go wherever you want and get off the car. It's not fun. People are changing from ownership to usership, but these services are not as fun and immersive as they should. Volvo proposed us to find a way to gamify the car sharing service and Swisscom challenged us to create a platform that performs a digital representation of an asset as a data-bound utility token that can be used within our platform. Our solution is both DECAF and VOLT, which work together to provide the people a decentralized car-sharing platform that makes our inner gamer smile.

What does it do?

DECAF

Decentralized car sharing made fun is an Ethereum based platform that provides car manufacturers a way to enter the car-sharing business. Manufacturers add cars to the network and receive tokens for doing so. The more cars a manufacturer adds to DECAF, the more tokens get distributed to the car maker. These tokens are then given to users based on use-time, using services for multiple days in a row, achievements and quests. DECAF tokens are, by definition, backed by cars.

How can you win tokens?

A user may win tokens and XP by requesting and using a certain manufacturer cars, by completing certain quests or unlocking achievements and each time you level up you win tokens. The tokens you receive can be given by more than one manufacturer, depending whose quests you completed, or by the time you used each brand's cars. There are also special quests which give XP as well as tokens.

How to spend your tokens?

Tokens can be spent to enhance UX. They can then be used to get discounts on the platform, free experiencies like museum visits, or discounts on an oil change. Discounts or vouchers of other services that want to partner with DECAF can also use our tokens. For example, a restaurant or a zoo might want to offer a discount for certain tokens for the exposure it will have in our platform.

Social

When you request a car, you have the option to tell the platform where you are going. If another person is requesting a ride to go the same way, you can both accept sharing the car to devide the expense. You can see each other profiles and see their DECAF feedback, level in the game and if you have the same interests. If you are using a car with friends that use DECAF, everyone would win tokens and save money. DECAF also makes you compete with your friends or people in the same area to get on top of the usage leaderboard. You can win extra tokens for being a regural user, making many kilometers and spening a lot of time in the service.

VOLT

Volvo token is how we imagine a car manufacturer implementing on top of our platform. The company will add cars to our platform that can then be requested by our users. They can also add quests and achievements to be completed by the users to improve UX by gamification and make people want to use their services over their competitors. If a user levels-up in the game, Volvo will give them tokens to award them for their fidelity by offering VOLT, the same being true if a user completes a certain special Volvo quest. This app adds fun and rewards to car sharing, making car sharing a service people will love to use.

Check the Ethereum Smart Contract. It was published to 0xbbd49bd432dc262838f7bb0ce41506c8374c2d12

By developing on top of DECAF, Volvo will be the pioneer and fullfill once again their legacy of innovating and focusing on the user.

How do we feel about our project?

We developed a smart-contract based on Ethereum Blockchain. While we didn't accomplish all of our objectives, we learnt a lot about decentralized platforms that run smart contracts (ETH and NEO Blockchain), and HyperLedger Fabric platform, and how to develop on top of them. It was our first time building something on top of blockchain platform, so we were very happy with our progress and with what we could present in the end. The Volvo companion app was made using web technologies to be easy to port between devices. We used HTML5, CSS and Javascript to make a user-friendly and fun web app. We aimed to build a car dashboard but time ran out on us. We feel like, in general, we learnt, coded and had fun during the cooking of this project.

What's next for DECAF?

If we receive a positive feedback from Volvo and Swisscom we plan to build a MVP (Minimum Viable Product) and to crowdfund this project through an ICO of DECAF.
