Inspiration

Every day, millions of people wake up and start doomscrolling - Instagram, Twitter, comment sections, outrage cycles. We’re consuming noise when our minds are at their sharpest.

That’s the moment we wanted to reclaim.

We built Debate.io to turn those passive minutes into active thinking. Into listening, learning, and competing. A space where argument isn't noise — it's progress. A place where social good becomes something you can participate in, shape, and win.

So we asked:
What if debate became a sport?
What if AI could moderate discourse?
What if everyday users — not just experts — could learn by watching and engaging?

What It Does

Debate.io is a gamified debate platform where users engage in 3-on-3 live or recorded debates on socially relevant issues. Think: Model UN meets Twitch, powered by AI.

  • Real-World Relevance: Politicians, educators, and policymakers can watch recaps, analyze reasoning, and listen to how people actually think — issue by issue
  • Live & Recap Debates: Join or watch 10-minute structured matches
  • Tournament Brackets: Teams advance in real-time playoff-style brackets
  • AI Moderation: GPT-powered agents score debates, detect logical fallacies, and summarize arguments
  • Spectator Engagement: Viewers react, comment, and follow the leaderboard
  • Social Good Topics: From AI ethics to climate justice — real arguments, real impact

How We Built It

  • Frontend: React + TailwindCSS for smooth UI transitions and real-time state updates
  • Backend: Node.js with Socket.io (Incomplete) for live scoring and match flow
  • AI Layer: GPT-4-tuned moderation API for live analysis, scoring, and summaries
  • Database: Firebase for fast state syncing and user data (mock)

Challenges We Ran Into

  • Real-Time Scoring Sync: Getting AI feedback and audience votes to update live without lag
  • Fallacy Detection: Training prompt logic that could handle varied inputs but return consistent, fair assessments
  • Balancing Spectator Impact: Designing a scoring system that feels democratic but still rewards quality reasoning
  • Creating Realistic Match Flow: Structuring debates that are short, high-impact, and engaging for both participants and spectators

Accomplishments We're Proud Of

  • Built an almost end-to-end functional debate engine with mock brackets and scoring
  • Used an AI moderation system that doesn't just score — it teaches
  • Designed a platform that feels like a game, but builds civic literacy and critical thinking
  • Made arguing feel exciting — and socially meaningful

What We Learned

  • AI can support, not replace, meaningful discourse — when structured well
  • Debate, done right, is one of the most powerful formats for shaping ideas and people
  • People don’t mind being judged — as long as it’s fair, fast, and insightful
