Inspiration

The theme was impermanence, and we chose to explore it through the lens of life and death. We were drawn to the idea of time and health constantly slipping away. That evolved into a gambling concept where players must risk the limited life they have left in order to survive. Impermanence is both a part of the story and built into the mechanics.

What it does

Deal With The Devil is a fast-paced gambling game set in hell. The Devil offers you a deal: gamble what remains of your life to escape. Players can bet their life points in three minigames:

  • Blackjack
  • Slots
  • Coin Flipping

When they lose, they lose the life they wagered. At the same time, their health is constantly decaying, creating pressure and urgency.

How we built it

We built the entire game in Godot.

  • designed and programmed all gameplay systems from scratch
  • created custom logic for betting and life decay
  • animated all of our own assets
  • designed UI, animations, and game flow ourselves

Everything was made during the hackathon timeframe.

Challenges we ran into

  • balancing life decay so the game felt intense but not unfair
  • tuning probabilities to make outcomes risky but achievable
  • implementing multiple minigames in a limited timeframe
  • hand-drawing assets under time pressure

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • creating an engaging thematic experience
  • implementing three playable games
  • building all assets ourselves
  • delivering a polished, cohesive experience under time constraints

What we learned

  • visuals can really impact emotional intensity. We spent a lot of time polishing the UI to make the game feel more immersive
  • how to quickly conceptualize and prototype

What's next for Deal With The Devil

We have a lot of ideas to expand Deal with the Devil, including

  • a shop system
  • upgrades
  • more and unique minigames
  • stronger story and devil interactions
