Inspiration
As students, we've all been there: staring at a list of 5 deadlines, all due in the same week, wondering which one to tackle first. Most planners just list dates; they don't tell you if you're actually going to survive. We wanted to build a tool that felt like a high-stakes "Command Center"—giving students the strategy and tactical awareness they need to beat the "Deadline Boss."
What it does
The Deadline Survival Optimizer is a tactical academic command center. It doesn't just list your tasks; it analyzes them. Priority Ranking: Uses a weighted algorithm to determine what actually needs your attention right now. Overload Detection: Tells you exactly how many hours per day you need to work to finish everything. If the risk is too high (over 100%), the system pulses red—a warning to scale back or seek help. Survival Plan: Generates a day-by-day tactical breakdown of which subjects to tackle and for how long.
How we built it
Core: Built with React and Vite for lightning-fast performance. Styling: Leverages Tailwind CSS v4 to create a custom Neo-Brutalist design system. Typography: Paired the sleek Inter with the pixel-art Press Start 2P (ByteBounce) font to give it an arcade strategy feel. Logic: A custom mathematical engine that calculates priority scores and risk levels based on time-to-deadline, difficulty, and total workload.
Challenges we ran into
Designing a UI that felt bold and authentic Balancing storytelling (hero section) with a serious dashboard Ensuring calculations remained realistic but simple
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a fully functional academic risk engine in limited time Created a system that genuinely helps students avoid overload Delivered a complete product with deployment Maintained clean and modular code structure
What we learned
How to build scalable UI quickly using Tailwind CSS State management in React for structured workload handling Using Local Storage for lightweight persistence Translating mathematical prioritization logic into usable UX Simplicity increases adoption
What's next for Deadline Survival Optimiser
The long-term vision is to evolve this into a complete Academic Strategy Engine — helping students make smarter decisions before crisis hits.
