Study Reaper - Study or Die :skull:
Inspiration
Growing up, I always struggled with procrastination during my college years. Traditional study apps with their gentle reminders and motivational quotes just didn't work for me. What actually worked was studying with friends on Discord servers - the social accountability and fear of letting others down was incredibly motivating. We ended up scoring great marks because we couldn't slack off when everyone could see our progress.
I realized that shame and social pressure are way more powerful motivators than inspiration.
That's when I decided to build Study Reaper - an app that beats procrastination through the fear of embarrassment rather than empty motivation. I wanted to make studying feel like a high-stakes game where failure has real (but harmless) consequences.
What it does
StudyReaper gamifies studying by introducing dramatic consequences for procrastination. Users get three "lives" and lose one each time they fail to complete a study session. The app implements embarrassing but harmless penalties like changing your profile picture to a crying anime character or auto-posting cringe confessions about your study failures.
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Countdown Timers | Dramatic Death Note anime aesthetics |
| Penalty System | Escalating embarrassment with each failure |
| Challenges |
Core Features:
- [x] Dramatic countdown timers with Death Note anime aesthetics
- [x] Challenges with friends
- [x] Escalating penalty system that gets more embarrassing with each failure
How we built it
I built StudyReaper using Bolt.new for rapid prototyping, which allowed me to iterate quickly on the core timer functionality. The UI is heavily inspired by Valorant's angular, tactical design language combined with Death Note's dramatic theming - creating this unique aesthetic that makes studying feel like a high-stakes operation.
Tech Stack:
- React with dark theme
- CSS3 with neon accents (cyan, red, purple)
- Animations for dramatic countdown effects
- Supabase for backend
- Clip-path for angular Valorant-style corners
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was backend integration - I'm relatively new to backend development, so implementing features like user authentication, friend systems, and social penalties was tough. Initially tried to do everything myself but fortunately, my developer friend has been helping me navigate through database design and API integration.
Another major challenge was explaining the complex game logic to Bolt.new. Features like the escalating penalty system and team elimination mechanics required breaking down the logic into very specific, digestible chunks. We had to find creative ways to prompt the AI to understand the psychological aspects of the app.
Getting the balance right between "embarrassing enough to motivate" and "not actually harmful" was also tricky. The penalties needed to have real social consequences without crossing ethical lines.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm most proud of creating something that actually works. That is so funny! :joy:
The UI design turned out better than I expected. The combination of Valorant's tactical aesthetic with Death Note's dramatic theming creates this unique experience that makes studying feel genuinely exciting and high-stakes.
Successfully implementing the core timer system with all its psychological triggers was also a major win.
What we learned
Building StudyReaper taught me that psychology is just as important as technology in app development. Understanding why people procrastinate and what actually motivates behavior change was crucial to designing effective features.
Key Learnings:
- Frontend development, especially animations and state management in React
- The importance of clear, specific prompting when working with AI development tools
- That sometimes the best solutions come from personal frustration
Most importantly, I learned that building something to solve my own problem led to insights I wouldn't have had otherwise.
Procrastination : The practice of carrying out less urgent tasks in preference to more urgent ones, or doing more pleasurable things in place of less pleasurable ones
What's next for StudyReaper
Roadmap:
- [ ] Full backend integration with user accounts
- [ ] AI-powered personalization
Long-term, I see StudyReaper becoming a platform for all kinds of accountability challenges - fitness, habits, goals. The core psychology of ==fear-based motivation== could work for many behavioral change scenarios beyond just studying.
