Inspiration

Budgeting apps show numbers, and numbers are easy to ignore. We wanted overspending to feel like something happened. (Note: Your guide instructs you to add one real, linked source here about student money stress, and strictly warns not to invent statistics).

What it does

A pet's health follows your budget. When it dies, you get a Case File that names the time of death, murder weapon, prime suspects, accomplices, motive and verdict. Users can reconstruct a sample month, or import their own transactions as CSV.

How we built it

We used HTML, CSS, vanilla JavaScript, GitHub, Google Fonts, and Piskel. The investigation logic lives in a tested engine, and all current data is simulated.

Challenges we ran into

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the theme and the reveal, along with the real wins from our build.

What we learned

Real lessons: using Git branches, splitting work by file, and testing logic separately from the page.

What's next for Dead Broke

Integrating real transaction data through a bank sandbox, shared cases with friends, and smarter categories.
