Inspiration

We wanted to make people feel safer when traveling in DC.

How it works

Using DC government big data from data.octo.dc.gov our application aggregated Crime Incidents in DC from the past few years. This data was ranked by how "sketchy" the crime was. For example homicide and sexual assault ranked much higher than theft. Each locality in DC was given a value for level of danger based of these ranks.

Our android app takes this data and will warn you when you enter a bad area. This is done using your GPS location.

Challenges I ran into

Learning to create an android app was new for all team members.

What's next for DC Crime Watch

Down the road DC Crime Watch will pull the live crime incidents to constantly update the app.
