Inspiration & Problem Solving
DBSA's mission and problem statement spoke out to us immediately: How might we remove the barrier of cost and access to care, and empower all individuals to self-manage their mental health?
To start off our project we first focused on narrowing down who we were trying to solve for: individuals who want to self-manage their mental health. From there we did research, why do individuals who want to self-manage their mental health find it difficult? What are the barriers?
What it does
Based off of our problem statement, business needs, and our target user base, we narrowed our views to:
- Adding an onboarding process: to make it easier for users to get access to resources, we wanted to create an onboarding process that would simplify what resources they would get recommended and easily navigate them to support groups + videos.
- Simplifying the areas of wellness: the wheel felt hard to get started on which spoke back to the issue we were trying to fix, so with the onboarding process and questionnaire we simplified it as much as possible and allowed users to further dive into a deeper quiz later on if they wanted.
- Supporting the support groups: with support groups, we wanted to make sure they were immediately recommended, and users also had access to a dedicated calendar to remind them of their upcoming support groups.
Challenges we ran into
- Working with differing opinions: Everyone has their own opinion, it's a given. We ran into these opinions often during the ideating phase and found it difficult to sometimes move forward. This added stress and strain on the group, but thankfully with good communication skills we were able to come to consensuses about our decisions.
- Unforeseen circumstances: Unfortunately one of our team members had to drop out in the middle of the hack. This was difficult and the other four of us attempted to rally to overcome this hurdle. Thankfully the team was willing to put in the extra work and go the extra mile to get what we needed done.
What we learned
- Teamwork: We were a team that had just met. At this hackathon! Teamwork doesn't always come naturally especially with a group of individuals pulled together from random circumstances who also didn't know how the others worked or solved conflict. We learned so much about proper communication and ensuring that our language uplifts each other to provide a creative and fun atmosphere.
- Focusing and narrowing: We can't solve everything. Especially in a time-constrained hackathon. But we realized we could come up with an amazing solution once we narrowed our focus to a specific user group and a specific answer to the problem statement provided. There are so many more things we'd love to improve but focusing and narrowing helped guide us towards a proper solution that was flushed out.
What's next for DBSA Wellness Resource Guide
- There's a lot to be done, but at the same time there's little to be done. This wellness guide should be completely free, and to achieve that we'll need to allow for as little maintenance as possible
- That being said, we still believe there are some improvements that can be made such as:
- Integrating an external API calendar that seamlessly allows users to sync their personal calendars
- Make the wellness wheel more interactive, add some fun for the user and give them more opportunities to interact.
- Add in more gratitude, whether it's finishing the quiz or joining a support group, blurbs and additional screens can be added easily to solidify a relationship with the user.
