Inspiration
My experience as an Oracle Production DBA and performance specialist inspired DBA Release Guardian. Even small database changes can cause locking, data loss, or performance problems. I wanted to make expert database review more accessible and reduce the repetitive work involved in delivering safer releases.
What it does
DBA Release Guardian is an AI-assisted project designed to review SQL migrations, explain database risks, and summarize automated test results within GitLab.
The planned end-to-end workflow includes testing migrations against a disposable PostgreSQL database, requiring human approval before deployment, and running post-deployment health checks. Failed checks would create a GitLab issue containing diagnostic evidence for investigation.
How we built it
I started by translating practical DBA release concerns into a focused review workflow and developing a Python prototype with AI-assisted development tools.
The intended architecture combines a specialized GitLab Duo agent, a custom flow, and GitLab CI/CD pipelines. The agent would analyze changes and explain findings, while pipeline jobs would execute migration tests and health checks. PostgreSQL is the initial target database.
Challenges we ran into
A key challenge was translating real-world DBA experience into checks that an automated workflow could apply consistently. Database risks depend on context, so findings need to explain both the potential problem and what a reviewer should investigate.
I also encountered Git authentication issues, repository synchronization conflicts, and Python environment setup problems. Working through these highlighted the importance of clear, reproducible setup instructions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I turned a practical problem from my DBA work into a focused project concept and an initial Python prototype. The project connects database expertise with release automation and establishes a clear scenario for demonstrating its value: detecting a risky migration, correcting it, testing it, and requiring approval before deployment.
What we learned
The project reinforced the importance of separating AI judgment from repeatable validation. An agent can explain risks and recommend actions, automated tests can provide evidence, and workflow controls can enforce human approval.
I also learned that reliable setup instructions and repository configuration are essential parts of making a prototype usable by others.
What's next for DBA Release Guardian — AI-agent
The next step is to complete and verify the PostgreSQL workflow in GitLab, including the Duo agent and custom flow, migration testing, approval controls, and post-deployment checks.
Future extensions could include Oracle support, performance regression analysis, rollback validation, and configurable database review policies.
