Inspiration
As students, we have all been confused with what we wanted to do with our careers. Choosing our school for post-secondary, major, and internships have had a major impact on our future, yet we feel as though we lacked a lot of the necessary information to make the most informed decision. Despite having testimonials and descriptions of jobs, we never felt that we had enough information to truly know what to expect.
However, after watching multiple “Day in my Life” videos from creators on YouTube, we had a better understanding of what our lives could look like if we choose that school or job. Thus, we wanted to create a website that we wished we could have turned to — a website that allows students to get a better understanding of the opportunities they are interested in, discover opportunities they did not even know existed and ask questions to people who have already gone through the experience.
What it does
Daze allows you to watch vlogs and “day in the life” videos of people from different majors/schools or anyone working at a company that you might be interested in. When navigating through daze, you will be introduced to top profiles of students from a selected school, popular videos from these students, then videos split by majors. You will be able to see a “day in the life” vlog of what a typical day looks of a certain major at any school! You can also select a potential company you would like to work at and see what an employee does on a daily basis. This will allow you to see if you are the right fit for the major and school or the company and position you are applying for!
How we built it
After designing our website and prototyping it on Figma, we developed it using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. We then deployed our website to Google Cloud’s Firebase and registered a custom domain name with domain.com. Note: The custom domain may not be ready at the time of submission. Domain Name: dazein.space
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge we faced was ideating, designing, coding and pitching our project within 24 hours, all while communicating remotely. Another challenge we faced was learning how to deploy our project to Firebase and connect it to a custom domain, but we were able to overcome this using documentation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of being able to finish our project within the time limit, and well before the deadline! We even got the chance to deploy our project as a website using Firebase with a custom domain.
What we learned
We learned how to utilize multiple Figma plug-ins to aid us in our work and how to deploy a website to Google Cloud’s Firebase. We also learned new facts about how many people are confused with what they want to pursue in the future and the vast amount of Google searches that have been made regarding “Day in the Life” videos.
What's next for daze
In the future, we hope to implement an algorithm that will help users discover programs or jobs they may not even know they are interested in based on their previous activity. We would also like to implement an accessibility feature for those who are hard of hearing or have visual impairments.
