Inspiration
Families juggle work, school pickups, and appointments for loved ones. One changed appointment can require several calls and messages to figure out who can help. DayRelay brings those decisions into one shared plan.
What it does
DayRelay helps families reschedule appointments and coordinate who will give the ride. These are family members—parents, partners, or relatives—not hired drivers.
Enter a schedule change, and DayRelay checks commitments and travel buffers, then suggests an available family member. You can adjust the date, time, and person directly in the proposed plan. Unresolved conflicts block approval. Changes are saved only after you approve them.
The app also prepares message and reminder drafts and exports calendar events. You choose when to send messages yourself.
How we built it
We built a working web prototype using TypeScript, React, Tailwind CSS, Cloudflare Workers, and Cloudflare D1, with development assistance from ChatGPT/Codex.
The current assistant uses rule-based request parsing and scheduling logic. It demonstrates a simulated assistant workflow and is not connected to Alexa+.
Challenges we ran into
Keeping conflict warnings accurate when the suggested family member changed was a key challenge. We also needed to let users resolve conflicts directly within the proposed plan and reliably preserve approved changes after refreshing the page.
Accomplishments that we’re proud of
Our working demo shows an appointment change, an available alternative, a conflicting manual selection that blocks approval, and a successful resolution. Approved changes persist, and the app prepares updated message and reminder drafts.
What we learned
Families need more than a warning that two commitments overlap. They need a clear alternative and an easy way to adjust it. We also learned to distinguish conflicts that have been avoided from conflicts that still need resolving, while keeping users in control of saving changes.
What’s next for DayRelay
We plan to add family invitations, external calendar connections, richer conversational understanding, and Alexa+ integration.
