Inspiration
Students and developers often have multiple goals to complete in a limited amount of time. Deciding what to work on first and organizing tasks into a manageable schedule can be challenging. We built DayPilot AI to explore how AI can make everyday planning simpler, more structured, and easier to follow.
What it does
DayPilot AI is an AI-powered productivity application that helps users organize their daily goals and manage tasks through a single interface.
Key features include:
- AI Planner: Turns user-provided goals and available time into a structured plan.
- Task Management: Organizes tasks in one place so users can review and manage their work.
- Progress Tracking: Allows users to update task status and mark completed items.
- Coding Practice Support: Provides relevant coding problem recommendations to support consistent technical learning.
How we built it
We built DayPilot AI with a modern web architecture. The frontend uses React, Vite, and Tailwind CSS to provide a responsive user interface. The backend uses Python and FastAPI to handle application logic and API requests, with SQLite for data persistence.
The application connects the planning interface with backend functionality to help users generate plans and manage their tasks. We deployed the frontend on Vercel and the backend on Render to make the project accessible online.
Challenges we faced
One of the main challenges was integrating the frontend and backend into a working application while ensuring that task creation, status updates, and plan generation behaved as expected. We also worked through deployment and API integration issues to make the application accessible through a live website.
Another challenge was turning a broad productivity idea into a focused workflow that users could understand quickly. We addressed this by bringing planning and task management together in a simple interface.
What we learned
Building DayPilot AI helped us gain practical experience in full-stack development, API integration, database-backed task management, deployment, and connecting AI-assisted planning with a usable web application. We also learned the importance of testing the complete workflow, not just individual features.
What's next
We would like to improve personalization, provide more flexible scheduling, enhance progress insights, and explore deeper integrations with productivity tools and voice-based assistants. Our goal is to make DayPilot AI a more adaptive companion for students and developers who want to plan their work and stay focused.
