Daylite Digital
AI-driven travel commerce connecting Travelers, Accommodation Providers, Ambassadors and Digital Payments
Daylite Digital is a built digital travel and accommodation commerce platform developed under Southern Cross Stars Group, connecting Travelers, Accommodation Providers, Daylite Ambassadors and digital commerce through one connected ecosystem.
Daylite Digital is built, not merely conceptualized for this hackathon. The platform has an existing public Shopify-based presence and a broader ecosystem around accommodation services, travel assistance, customer support, provider participation and the Daylite Ambassador Programme.
The PayPal AI Hackathon is being used to demonstrate an important capability within that existing platform: connecting AI-assisted travel discovery to a meaningful digital payment experience.
Southern Cross Stars Group
Southern Cross Stars Group is the group structure behind the ecosystem.
It is made up of:
- Southern Cross Stars Investments CC — Namibia, the Namibian company through which the Southern Cross Stars Group's Namibian operations are established.
- Southern Cross Stars Digital (Pty) Ltd — South Africa, the South African company through which the Group's South African and international digital-business operations are established.
Daylite Digital sits within this wider Group structure.
The objective is not to create a business that forces African digital commerce into one country. The objective is to build an ecosystem capable of connecting African businesses, people and opportunities with international markets while allowing participation from Africa.
The Daylite Digital ecosystem
Daylite Digital connects multiple participants:
Accommodation Providers → Daylite Digital → Daylite Ambassadors → Travelers → Bookings → Revenue
Accommodation Providers are not simply customers of the platform. They are intended to participate directly in the Daylite Digital commercial ecosystem by making their accommodation and related offerings available through the platform.
The Daylite Ambassador Programme provides the human participation and distribution layer.
Ambassadors can help introduce Travelers to Daylite Digital, promote available offerings and participate in the commercial journey.
The Ambassador Programme is supported by Shopify commerce infrastructure and UpPromote for referral and commission management. UpPromote currently supports Shopify-based affiliate programmes, flexible commissions, tracking, automated management and PayPal payouts.
The result is intended to connect:
Digital Platform + Accommodation Providers + Travelers + Ambassadors + Commerce + Payments
within one ecosystem.
Why Daylite Digital exists
Travel discovery and booking can be fragmented.
A Traveler may know the type of experience they want without knowing the exact destination, accommodation or travel option that best matches that intention.
At the same time, Accommodation Providers need digital channels through which they can reach more Travelers, while people participating as Ambassadors need opportunities to participate in digital commerce.
Daylite Digital was built to connect those participants.
The customer experience is designed around a more natural journey:
Discover → Ask → Explore → Select → Book
Instead of requiring a Traveler to begin with rigid search categories, the AI experience allows the Traveler to describe what they want in natural language.
The PayPal AI Hackathon implementation
For the PayPal AI Hackathon, I extended the Daylite Digital commerce experience with an AI-to-PayPal transaction flow.
The demonstrated prototype is available at:
The application demonstrates:
Natural-language travel intent → Gemini → Controlled Daylite catalogue → Server-authoritative selection and pricing → PayPal Sandbox → Checkout
Gemini is used for the discovery and recommendation layer.
The AI does not determine the commercial price.
Experience names, descriptions and prices come from the controlled server catalogue.
The application server remains authoritative over the transaction amount.
The prototype demonstrates this directly by recalculating the amount when the Traveler changes the number of Travelers:
1 Traveler → US$189
5 Travelers → US$945
The resulting transaction is then passed into PayPal Sandbox checkout.
This separation is deliberate:
AI recommends. The server determines the commercial amount. PayPal handles the payment experience.
The PayPal integration is therefore not an isolated payment button added to an unrelated AI demonstration. It is part of the commerce journey being demonstrated.
The PayPal AI Hackathon specifically requires meaningful use of both PayPal and AI, and its rules allow a functional application to be provided through repository setup/run instructions rather than requiring a publicly hosted application.
How to run the demonstration
The current competition build runs locally.
Windows CMD
cd /d "C:\Users\Titus\Downloads\daylite-digital-paypal-main\daylite-digital-paypal-main"
npm start
The server should report:
Daylite Digital demo listening on http://localhost:3000
PayPal Sandbox configured: yes
Gemini configured: yes
Then open:
The project repository contains the application source, catalogue, server, AI integration, PayPal integration, tests and setup files required to run the demonstration.
The PayPal AI Hackathon rules explicitly permit judges to build and run a submitted project themselves using complete repository instructions, so a local functional demonstration is valid under the submission requirements.
The real Daylite Digital platform behind the demonstration
The localhost application is deliberately focused on demonstrating the AI + PayPal transaction journey.
It is not intended to reproduce the entire Daylite Digital ecosystem inside one hackathon screen.
The wider Daylite Digital platform exists separately and provides the commercial context for the prototype.
A judge investigating Daylite Digital can therefore move from the hackathon demonstration to the real platform and see the broader travel and accommodation ecosystem.
The hackathon prototype demonstrates one technical layer of that ecosystem:
AI discovery → selection → payment
The real Daylite Digital platform provides the wider commercial environment:
Travelers + Accommodation Providers + Services + Ambassadors + Commerce
This separation keeps the competition demonstration focused while making it clear that the technology is connected to a real digital business rather than an imaginary travel company created solely for the hackathon.
Why Namibia matters to this submission
This competition entry is intentionally connected to Southern Cross Stars Investments CC in Namibia.
That is important because the PayPal problem is not merely theoretical for me.
Namibia is my home market and Southern Cross Stars Investments CC is a Namibian company.
Yet the current PayPal ecosystem does not give Namibia the same receiving and withdrawal capability available in countries such as South Africa.
PayPal's current developer documentation lists South Africa among countries with the “Send, receive, and withdraw” payout feature set. Namibia does not appear in that eligible-country list.
PayPal's Namibia user agreement also confirms that PayPal services vary by country/region and that available withdrawal methods depend on the country in which the account is registered.
This creates a real problem for African entrepreneurs.
A Namibian digital business can build software, sell internationally, create jobs, work with accommodation providers and participate in global digital commerce, while still encountering limitations in how it can receive and withdraw international digital payments.
That is one reason I intentionally entered this competition with Southern Cross Stars Investments CC in Namibia, alongside the South African entity within Southern Cross Stars Group.
I am not entering only to demonstrate that I can build an AI travel application.
I am also demonstrating that Namibian businesses can build technology for global digital commerce and should be able to participate fully in the payment infrastructure that makes that commerce possible.
A broader African issue
The issue is larger than Namibia.
Across Africa, PayPal's current country availability and payment capabilities are not uniform. PayPal's developer documentation shows full payout capabilities in some African markets—including Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Senegal and South Africa—while many other African markets do not appear in the current “Send, receive, and withdraw” payout list.
That broader gap matters because digital commerce should not require African founders to relocate their businesses to another country simply to obtain payment infrastructure that enables them to receive international revenue.
The countries not represented in PayPal's current payout eligibility list include markets such as:
Algeria, Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe, among others depending on the specific PayPal product and feature.
This should not be interpreted as saying that PayPal offers no service whatsoever in every one of those countries. PayPal itself states that service availability varies by country and product. The point is specifically that they are not listed in the current PayPal Payouts “Send, receive, and withdraw” feature set.
The question I want this competition to open
What happens when African entrepreneurs can build globally competitive digital businesses but the payment infrastructure available to them does not provide the same ability to receive and withdraw international commerce?
I do not want the answer to be:
“Move to South Africa.”
I want the answer to become:
“Build from Africa, participate from Africa, earn from Africa and connect to the world from Africa.”
That is particularly important for young African entrepreneurs.
I should not have to relocate from Namibia simply because the infrastructure for receiving international digital commerce is more mature across the border.
I want Southern Cross Stars Group to demonstrate that the talent, ideas and businesses already exist in Namibia.
The missing piece is access to the same global commercial infrastructure.
What I hope PayPal can help make possible
If Daylite Digital succeeds commercially, the objective is not simply to use PayPal to make payments.
The larger objective is to enable people participating in the Daylite Digital ecosystem to participate economically.
That includes:
Travelers purchasing travel and accommodation offerings.
Accommodation Providers receiving business through Daylite Digital.
Daylite Ambassadors participating in referral and commercial distribution.
Digital businesses receiving international customers.
African entrepreneurs participating in global digital commerce without being forced to relocate simply because of payment infrastructure.
UpPromote is already designed to support affiliate programmes, commission structures, tracking and PayPal payouts within Shopify commerce, which provides a useful foundation for the Ambassador commercial model.
What I learned
Building Daylite Digital has taught me that AI is most valuable when it is connected to a real commercial journey.
The AI recommendation is not the end product.
It is the beginning of a transaction.
The real challenge is connecting:
Intent → Discovery → Selection → Pricing → Payment → Commercial participation
in a way that is secure, understandable and scalable.
The PayPal AI Hackathon gave me an opportunity to demonstrate that connection.
Challenges
One of the biggest challenges has been integrating AI into a commerce environment without allowing the AI to become the source of truth for commercial transactions.
Another has been connecting the payment layer to an ecosystem intended to operate across markets.
The most important challenge, however, extends beyond the code.
It is the question of how African businesses can participate fully in global digital commerce when payment availability differs substantially between countries.
The PayPal Sandbox makes it possible to demonstrate the technical transaction journey today.
The larger commercial question is how that capability can eventually become available to legitimate businesses operating from markets where receiving and withdrawing international PayPal commerce remains restricted.
Where Daylite Digital is going
Daylite Digital is built as a long-term travel and accommodation commerce platform.
The commercial ecosystem is designed to expand through:
- deeper travel inventory integrations;
- accommodation technology integrations such as Travelopro and Cloudbeds;
- AI-driven Traveler assistance;
- Accommodation Provider participation;
- the Daylite Ambassador Programme and Hub;
- Shopify commerce;
- UpPromote-powered Ambassador referral and commission management;
- international digital commerce and payment infrastructure.
The intention is for people participating in Daylite Digital to have economic roles beyond simply making payments.
A Traveler can purchase.
An Accommodation Provider can participate and receive business.
An Ambassador can promote and earn commissions.
A digital business can connect African supply with international demand.
That is the ecosystem I am building.
The vision
Make travel commerce more conversational, connected and accessible — while creating digital commercial opportunities for Travelers, Accommodation Providers, Ambassadors and African entrepreneurs.
I am not presenting Namibia as a limitation.
I am presenting Namibia as proof that the capability already exists.
