Daylight - The Sunscreen Game
-
Wear enough sunscreen throughout the week and your egg will hatch! But don't wear enough and your egg will fry!
-
Use your Apple Health data combined with your sunscreen logs to see how well protected you are from the sun!
-
View your daily sun (and sunscreen) reports and see how your usage is measuring up!
Inspiration
I am not great about putting on sunscreen but I am even worse about reapplying it. So can I make an app to help me (and all of us) be better at sun protection?
What it does
It gamifies sunscreen usage by using your Apple Health’s Time in Daylight metric combined with your self-reported logging of sunscreen usage. When you log sunscreen usage, it provides an iOS Live Activity showing you when you should reapply. You can also log your sunscreen usage from the iOS control center (available starting iOS 18).
The gamification kicks in on the middle tab, where if you wear enough sunscreen throughout the week and your egg will hatch! But if you don’t, your egg will fry! 🐣 🍳
How I built it
- 2 weeks to ideate on the product, learn the frameworks (health kit, live activities, & control center)
- 2 weeks to start and finish it to make it feature complete
- 1 week for polish and animations

Challenges I ran into
This app was written in 5 weeks. So a major challenge was scoping it to be a complete app while still polished. There were some features that were cut before the deadline such as a full calendar view and creating a unique reward every time you hatch (or fry) your egg.
Accomplishments that I am proud of
Making something as unsexy as “wear more sunscreen” kind of fun. And that it might actually help people take care of themselves better. I have seen my own behaviors change around wearing more sun protection. It’s just funny how something as simple as “don’t fry your egg!” has made me better about wearing sunscreen vs like “protect yourself from skin cancer.”
What I learned
Had to learn more about the science of light intensity actually. That is a piece of metadata provided from Apple Health in the Time in Daylight metric and so had to go down some deep dives to determine what determines an intensity that actually needs sunscreen so that I could come up with a scoring system that was fair. (i.e. wearing sunscreen for 5 minutes in 15k light intensity is probably more important than wearing sunscreen for 5 minutes in 5k light intensity. The intensity changes the whole dynamic of when you need to wear sunscreen). The goal is not to be a sunscreen czar but to make you more self-aware of “oh I should probably be wearing sunscreen right now.”
What's next for Daylight - The Sunscreen Game
I will be gamifying it further by including unique “hatches” and unique “fried eggs” or “frying pans”. The frying pan can almost be like a Razzie award and the hatches will be like different type of animals and dinosaurs hatched etc. Similar to the Apple fitness awards and include limited edition challenges. I'm also planning on getting a full calendar view in there to give users more bang for their buck wit the all-access pass. I will also be optimizing the watch app and have that be part of the all-access subscription plan. Similar to DawnPatrol's watch app!
A lot to do!! We're just getting started!!
