Inspiration

This project draws inspiration from two sources of profound resilience. First, David Ben-Gurion himself—Israel's founding father who transformed an impossible dream into reality, building a nation in the desert through sheer determination and visionary leadership. His story of perseverance in the face of overwhelming odds resonates powerfully today.

Second, and more personally, this work is dedicated to my co-producer David Greenberg, who passed away just two weeks into this project. His sudden loss transformed this from a creative endeavor into a tribute to resilience itself—the ability to continue creating meaningful work even in the face of grief. Like Ben-Gurion's vision for the Negev, David Greenberg believed in bringing important stories to life, and completing this project became a way to honor his memory and commitment to meaningful storytelling.

What it does

"David Ben-Gurion Speaks: Act 2" brings Israel's founding father back to life through advanced AI technology to speak about his vision for Ben-Gurion University and the development of the Negev desert. Created for Americans For Ben-Gurion University (A4BGU), this digital avatar allows contemporary audiences to hear directly from Ben-Gurion about the values and vision that drove his work. In this episode, he discusses the establishment of BGU and the importance of developing the Negev—themes that remain relevant today. Other episodes in the series address contemporary challenges, including reflections on October 7th, demonstrating how historical wisdom can speak to present circumstances.

How I built it

The technical process involved multiple cutting-edge AI tools working in harmony. I began with Nano Banana and Magnific to generate and refine the base character of David Ben-Gurion, carefully crafting his iconic appearance and presence. Hedra provided the animation technology to bring the static image to life with realistic facial movements and expressions. For the voice, I used ElevenLabs to clone and synthesize Ben-Gurion's speech patterns, ensuring historical authenticity. Finally, I composed and edited everything in Adobe After Effects, adding the library environment backdrop and polishing the final presentation.

Working alongside producer Melanie Notkin, we carefully researched Ben-Gurion's speaking style, mannerisms, and historical context to ensure the avatar would feel authentic and respectful to his legacy.

Challenges

The greatest challenge was not technical but emotional—continuing this work after losing my co-producer David Greenberg early in the project. Grief threatened to derail the entire endeavor, but his belief in bringing important historical figures to life for educational purposes pushed me forward. In many ways, completing this became an act of resilience that mirrored Ben-Gurion's own story.

Technically, achieving authenticity proved challenging. Creating a digital human that feels genuine rather than uncanny requires balancing multiple elements: the voice must sound natural, facial animations must be subtle and believable, and the overall presence must convey the gravitas of the historical figure. Each tool in the pipeline needed careful tuning to avoid the "AI look" that can distance viewers.

Synthesizing historical authenticity with modern AI capabilities required extensive research and iteration. We wanted Ben-Gurion to speak in ways that honored his actual beliefs and speaking patterns while addressing topics relevant to A4BGU's contemporary mission.

What I learned

This project taught me that AI tools are not just about technical capability—they're about preserving memory and continuing conversations across time. Digital resurrection of historical figures, when done thoughtfully and respectfully, can educate new generations and keep important legacies alive.

I learned that resilience comes in many forms. Ben-Gurion's resilience built a nation in the desert. David Greenberg's resilience inspired meaningful storytelling. And creative resilience means continuing important work even when grief makes it difficult. Sometimes the act of creation itself becomes an act of remembrance and healing.

Most practically, I learned that creating convincing digital humans requires orchestrating multiple specialized AI tools, each excelling at one aspect: character generation, animation, voice synthesis, and final composition. The future of this technology is not in single monolithic tools, but in thoughtful combinations that honor both technical excellence and human meaning.
