Inspiration

After attending the Sun Life Workshop on GenAI, I learned more about Sun Life Asks, the AI chatbot that the team at Sun Life is currently developing. Although winning multiple awards, due to tight regulations, Sun Life Asks has been limited to employee usage on internal laptops and computers. So I thought, with respect to the Sun Life case study, wouldn't something like Sun Life Asks be a great addition to Sun Life's goal of attracting and retaining a Gen Z client base—without being limited to employees only? Imagine, a lost university aimlessly trying to navigate the financial market. They plan on investing their first $7,000 in their TFSA but don't know what ETF to invest in. Or, maybe this university student wants to take out their first insurance policy but doesn't know what to prioritize first. Introducing Dave, your new personal Sun Life assistant. Don't know what ETF to invest in, but have an idea of what stocks you want to buy? Ask Dave! Don't know if you should take out a life insurance or car insurance policy first? Ask Dave! Any more questions? Just ask Dave!

Dave is an AI agent powered by an LLM pipeline that is able to scrape data and recommend ETFs according to your stock picks. It'll give you the best ETFs based on market share, your account type and risk profile, and more. Investing in an ETF is generally considered safer than investing in a single stock, so Dave gives you the chance to essentially invest in several different ETFs at the same time that all include your stock picks, thus giving you more diversification in your portfolio.

Dave provides a fun and interactive way for Gen Z to engage themselves actively in the management of their finances and pick ETFs that best suit their needs! Adding stocks to a bucket list and letting Dave do the work for you instead of having to manually scrape thousands of ETF datasets is the way to go!

Challenges we ran into

Hacking solo has been a good change of pace for me, although the amount of work is considerably higher! Learning to manage your time wisely and balancing your time between having fun and working is incredibly important.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm glad I was able to create a functioning full-stack web application in less than 24 hours all by myself!

What we learned

Be patient. Things don't always work out the way you want them to work out, so just debug your way outta there.
