Inspiration

Our team finds inspiration in data mining and visualization. In this assignment, we liked the ability to search for data for analysis ourselves, as well as choose how we want to see the end result. This allowed us to show all our creativity in practice.

What it does

Our project shows the influence of Chinese media on subscribers around the world. We have carefully analyzed Parent entities and owners of given accounts, the content they post and the number of followers they have. Thus in our visualization content type distribution, influence of certain Chinese organizations and the influence of Chinese social media on the regions of interest.

How I built it

We have started from dividing the initial datasets into separate ones for each media. After that we tried to get access to accounts from all social media, but accomplished it only with YouTube. Then we decided to use the data we have the best way we can and build our analysis and visualization on them.

Challenges I ran into

The greatest challenge on our way was the fact that we could not retrieve any information from Meta social media and X without paying. However, we have built our work on the data from YouTube, TikTok and overall social media statistics from the initially provided dataset.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We are proud of having success in work with various visualization libraries even though we have not had such experience before and our well-coordinated teamwork.

What I learned

Technically we have learned how to retrieve a great amount of data from the YouTube API services, analyze it properly and built interactive plot based on it. But apart from technical process we have had a great opportunity to improve our teamwork skills: we have understood how to break the work into parts for each member of the team and have helped each other in different subtasks.

What's next for DataVis

Since we found the task quite interesting, we will probably return to make some additional visualizations after the end of the hackathon. We also believe that future hackathons on this topic will be no less exciting for both us and other participants.
