Inspiration
Privacy policies are often long and difficult to understand. People frequently accept them without knowing how their personal information may be collected, used, shared, or retained. I wanted to make this information easier to explore and understand.
What it does
DataTrail transforms privacy policies into interactive data journeys. Users can explore four stages: Collect, Use, Share, and Keep. It presents relevant policy evidence, identifies vague or missing information, and separates explicit policy statements from analytical interpretations.
How I built it
I developed DataTrail as an interactive web application, using AI-assisted development to help implement and refine its interface and analysis features. I also used structured project planning documents to organize the scope, requirements, and technical specifications.
Challenges and learning
One key challenge was making complex privacy information understandable without misleading users. I learned the importance of distinguishing what a policy explicitly states from interpretation and uncertainty. DataTrail analyzes policy disclosures; it does not claim to verify an app's actual runtime behavior.
What's next
I want to improve policy analysis, expand input options, and make it easier for users to compare privacy disclosures and make informed decisions.
