We decided to look at crime data provided by the Houston Police Department from 2017. This crime data is limited to Part 1 offenses, which include murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, auto theft, and theft. Primarily, we wanted to create visualizations concerning the areas that Rice students frequent (such as the Heights, Montrose, and Midtown) in order to learn more about how crime affects these areas. Variables that were of particular interest include offense type, offense date, location of offense, and time of offense. Secondly, we wanted to learn more about how to use Tableau and decided to create our visualizations using this platform. We found that Tableau was particularly helpful when trying to overlay map data with certain socioeconomic characteristics such as population density, household income, age, and race.
