What it does
DataSphere gathers records of historical events from various sources and compiles them to create an interactive globe of the interesting happenings from any period/locale. DataSphere makes it easy to click through any and all events of interest. As our database expands, you can use it to explore events of all kinds, such as keeping up with global current events, exploring the history of your hometown, or to take another look at historical conflicts.
How we built it
Our stack uses a MongoDB Atlas database, Elixir + Phoenix backend, and frontend powered by WebGL Earth. We used Google BigQuery gather and parse over 200GB of news and natural disaster data, GCP to host the backend and run large computations, and GitHub Pages to host the static frontend.
