Inspiration
Right to information Act of 2005 enacted to provide citizens of India with the right to access information held by public authorities and promote transparency. Many government provides open data sources or websites for the public to use it accordingly. But it is still difficult for the people to search across various government platforms for one information. This problem has inspired us to create a website which brings all the links and information available in various government platforms under one platform.
What it does
Our envisioned "DATALIB" website acts as a central web platform providing access to a diverse array of open data sources. Its primary functions encompass data discovery, enabling users to effortlessly explore open datasets spanning various categories and topics, including government data, environmental data, financial data, and more. Moreover, the platform ensures easy access to these datasets, offering direct links and accessibility, thus facilitating research, analysis, and project implementation.
Site includes comprehensive descriptions, rules , regulations and instructions for usage, enhancing user understanding and data utilization. Additionally, the website keeps users informed about the latest developments in the open data realm, including new datasets, data-related events, and pertinent news.
Data quality is paramount, with the platform ensuring that all listed datasets are reliable and up-to-date. Regular reviews and updates are conducted as needed to maintain data accuracy. We also provide options for the users to contribute to the open data community by submitting their own datasets, subject to review and validation.
Personalization features can also be included so that user can create accounts and have customization options, enable users to save their preferred datasets, set up notifications for new data releases, and tailor their data search experience. Also a feedback system is implemented to enable users to report issues with datasets, suggest improvements, and share their experiences with the platform.
In summary, the overarching objective of the "DATALIB" website is to serve as a comprehensive resource for individuals and organizations interested in open data. It facilitates the discovery, access, analysis, and collaboration involving open datasets, empowering users across diverse fields such as research, innovation, and decision-making.
Additionally it can provide data interpretation and analysis features and also tutorials for the users for rightful data usage.
How we built it
We are using a few core languages and APIs to create, design, and improve the functionality of websites. These languages include HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), which is used to structure and edit the content of web pages; CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), which is used to style and format web page elements; and JavaScript, which is used to bring interactive and dynamic features to web pages. These languages are complemented by various APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that facilitate various aspects of web development.
Challenges we ran into
The primary difficulties we encountered included beginning with no prior knowledge of website development or HTML, gathering the necessary data, and attempting to structure and handle it effectively. As we started on this project, we quickly realized that even the creation of a modest website demanded an extensive amount of effort, making it a truly a challenging experience.
What's next for DATALIB
Advance the platform to the next level by working together with more data sources, government bodies, and different groups to offer a wider range of data on the platform. Also provide extensive educational materials such as tutorials, courses, and webinars to empower users in maximizing the utility of the open data resources accessible via the platform.
