Inspiration

Data is everywhere, but many people struggle to turn a table of numbers into something they can understand and act on. DataLens was inspired by the idea of making everyday data analysis simple and accessible without requiring a data science background.

We wanted to create a lightweight tool where someone could enter a small dataset and quickly understand what their numbers are saying.

What DataLens Does

DataLens turns simple datasets into clear insights. Users can enter observations, analyze their data, view key statistics and trends, and receive plain-English explanations of what the numbers mean.

The current experience includes dataset creation, validation, percentage-change analysis, data-quality checks, visual summaries, and a Pro experience.

How We Built It

DataLens was built as a React Native application using Expo and TypeScript. The interface was designed around a simple mobile-first workflow so users can move from entering data to understanding it with minimal friction.

For monetization, we integrated RevenueCat. The project uses a Pro entitlement and a monthly Pro product. RevenueCat's Test Store was used during development to test the complete purchase and entitlement flow without charging real money.

The Pro experience checks the RevenueCat customer entitlement and updates the application when DataLens Pro becomes active.

What We Learned

Building DataLens taught us how to combine product design, data analysis, mobile development, and subscription infrastructure into one working application.

We also learned that a successful purchase flow is more than displaying a payment button. The application needs to receive and verify the customer's entitlement before unlocking the Pro experience.

Challenges

One of our biggest challenges was connecting the RevenueCat purchase flow to the application's Pro access state. A successful test purchase initially appeared to complete without changing the Pro screen.

We traced the issue to the application's entitlement handling and updated the app to check the RevenueCat customer information and active datalens _pro entitlement.

Another challenge was developing and testing the project primarily from a mobile environment. This required keeping the workflow simple and carefully testing each stage of the application.

What's Next

DataLens is designed to grow from a simple data-exploration tool into a broader workspace for people who want to understand their data without needing advanced data-science skills.

Future improvements could include richer analytics, additional visualizations, shareable reports, export options, and expanded dataset capabilities.
