DataForge – Privacy-Preserving Synthetic Data Studio

Inspiration

I was inspired to build DataForge because data plays an important role in developing and testing modern applications, but real-world datasets may contain sensitive personal information. Sharing such data can create privacy risks. This motivated me to develop a platform that generates synthetic data, evaluates its quality, and identifies potential privacy risks.

What It Does

DataForge is a web-based application that allows users to upload datasets or explore sample datasets, generate synthetic records, compare original and synthetic data, and review potential privacy risks. It also provides data previews, evaluation metrics, and downloadable reports to help users understand the generated data.

How I Built It

I developed DataForge using Python and Flask for the backend and HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend. I used Pandas and NumPy for data processing and statistical operations. I organized the application into separate modules for dataset management, synthetic data generation, quality evaluation, privacy checks, and report generation. I also focused on creating a user-friendly interface that makes the workflow simple and accessible.

Challenges I Faced

One of my main challenges was generating synthetic data while maintaining patterns similar to the original dataset. I also worked on connecting the frontend with backend API endpoints, organizing the application into separate modules, and presenting evaluation results clearly. Another important challenge was ensuring that privacy-check results were explained responsibly without claiming complete anonymity.

What I Learned

Through this project, I improved my skills in Flask development, API integration, data processing, statistical sampling, and responsive web design. I gained a better understanding of synthetic data generation and learned why data quality and privacy risks must be evaluated together. I also strengthened my problem-solving skills by connecting different components into a working application.

Future Scope

In the future, I would like to enhance DataForge with advanced synthetic data generation techniques, stronger privacy-preserving methods, additional evaluation metrics, and support for larger datasets.

My vision: DataForge — Forge Data. Fuel Innovation.
