Inspiration

Poor health information system has been identified as a major challenge within the African community. Most hospitals are using the paper-based system which costly, limited storage, security and lack of back-ups. Most patients tend to have files in different hospitals and have no idea or access to a complete health history. Health professionals have to guess a patient's health history which may result in wrong diagnoses or duplicate tests or drugs or services that could result in severe illness and/or lead to death. Doctors who are unable or do not treat patient within the set standards are not identified or monitored to track their performance as they is often no incentives. Thus, The increase in medical negligence and low quality of healthcare services leading to high mortality and morbidity rates in health facilities due to lack of accountability. Healthcare database is very limited in most developing countries and there are no tools to measure the community health status. It makes it difficult to identify prevalence of disease, demographic characteristics of a population, health provider performance analysis etc).

To create a digital database/platform that will enable healthcare providers have quick access to patient’s accurate and complete health records using a phone and unique number and data stored on to the cloud

What it does

A digital database/platform that will enable healthcare providers have quick access to patient’s accurate and complete health records to effectively provide safer and quality care, reduce medical errors, healthcare cost and the use of data to improve preventive care and health systems research.

With a unique number and a phone, a doctor will be able to dial and receive an automated message which first verify the patient’s identity (using name, date of birth etc) followed by the patient health history. The doctor then records his/her diagnosis as a voice message which goes on to the cloud.

It will use a voice-to-text system to translate information. It will also feature a text messaging system to send reminders and information to patients. It will also create charts and graphs from patients medical history to assess their health improvement rate and the database can used to monitor a population’s health status.

It is a cloud-based system

~ Registering a kid or a baby who does not have a mobile phone will be done under his parents' phone by adding initials of his names to the parents number. ~Patients at the first time should be added by the hospital, but after adding him he will be in the system forever and accessible at any hospital. Patients will not be allowed to create accounts them selves. ~ logging in to the patient account at any hospital you will be able to see the following information:

  • Patient's clinical records, the name of hospitals he went to, the tests carried-out, the medicines given, etc

How I built it

The patient registration form is a simple HTML file with CSS used to style the output layout.

Challenges I ran into

We encountered several challenges during this hackathon. Communication was the major barrier as you could not get all team members online at the same time, delay in response and time differences.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We are proud of the efforts that put us step forward to improve access to patient information which can ensure provision of safe and quality healthcare services.

What I learned

We learnt a lot throughout this hackathon especially from team members. It have improved our ability of working virtually with great team work and collaboration of ideas and skills. It was an eye-opening using several platforms like slack for our meeting and the mentors were so helpful in shaping our ideas.

What's next for DataCare Afrik

We will work together as a team on this demo after the hackaton to get a finish product. Connect with Investors/partners for funding opportunities. Enrol programs through pilot study in some African communities. Laising with governmental/non-governmental hospitals to test the product.
