Inspiration

We wanted to give Highview a clearer picture of how students are doing, spotting patterns early so instructors can step in before someone falls behind. Creating time saving tools for staff and educators at Highview to allow that time to be used for for the betterment of the students.

What it does

The platform pulls attendance, extra effort, and instructor notes into one dashboard so staff can see who’s thriving, who needs attention, and what follow-up actions are in motion.

How we built it

We combined a modern web interface with Next.js and shadcn/ui with a AWS RDS postgres db, layering in integrations for email outreach with Resend and structured workflows to keep everyone aligned. We deployed it on an AWS EC2 instance.

Challenges we ran into

We had to figure out how to integrate RDS and had issues with the schools network causing timeouts when connecting. We needed to use a VPN to access our RDS db.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We now surface at-risk students automatically, give instructors a clear record of every interaction, and make it easy to reward extra participation without manual recalculations.

What we learned

Clear data definitions, gentle communication flows, and thoughtful UX all matter when a tool is used daily by busy educators.

What's next for Highview Student Management

We plan to add more nudges for students, richer progress insights for instructors, and deeper integrations with the tools the team already loves.
