Inspiration

The 2020 census shows that U.S. states with the fastest-growing population score the worse when it comes to the quality of their residents’ health and access to care. Texas is amongst those states and in fact ranks as the worst in the country. They have large numbers of uninsured adults, high levels of premature death from treatable conditions, less investment in public health, and residents facing mental illness unable to get the care they need.

What it does

We sought out to improve the health of our Texas residents by building a web application that seeks to address this problem by retrieving user health info. The information imputed in the chatbot is used to find if the user is at risk for severe illness, and deliver information on healthy food recommendations

How we built it

This application uses vue.js which is a front end javascript framework for building user interfaces. Our intelligent chatbot is running on Amazon Lex, which is used to create the backend of the smart chatbot. AWS lambda, which is serverless, is used to calculate and deliver all results after the assessment. Finally, it is being deployed using AWS amplify.

Challenges we ran into

We have never worked on web applications before, and we tried to build an application using react and angular but were not able to accomplish what we wanted until we discovered the Vue.js framework, and amazon lex for building an artificial intelligent chatbot.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the fact that we have built a successfully running web application. But not only that, we proud of creating a web application that hosts a smart chatbot, we are especially proud of the fact that our web application is accessible to the public to use so that they are made aware of their health risks and get the information needed to improve their health as well.

What we learned

We learned how to build a chatbot with various frameworks as well as the disparity of the healthcare system in Texas.

What's next for SmarterWellness

What’s next for our product is to: 1) design a beautiful ui/ux for the application, 2) Add a feature that delivers knowledge of sustainable food resources in the communities of our users who live in food swamps that contribute to obesity.
