Inspiration
We were inspired by the lack of transparency and accessibility in government data, which prevents citizens, especially the working class, from understanding how their taxes are being used.
What it does
DashGov simplifies complex government data, like the national budget, into clear, interactive charts and graphs, helping citizens understand public spending and engage in governance.
How we built it
We used a combination of data visualization tools, AI-powered insights, and a user-friendly interface to create an intuitive platform. Figma was used to develop early prototypes and UI/UX design. For the frontend, we used flutter, while firebase was used for backend. Lastly, Gemini AI API was used to integrate AI capabilities onto the app. The dashboard consolidates fragmented data into easy-to-understand formats.
Challenges we ran into
First of all, ideation took a really long time. We had a phase of analysis paralysis and couldn't decide how to proceed next. Thankfully, we eventually did something. Data accessibility and fragmentation were significant challenges. We had to gather and format various public datasets into a cohesive platform while ensuring the information was simple enough for non-expert users. Additionally, getting the API to work took way much longer than it did.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’ve created a functional, interactive dashboard that makes government data accessible to ordinary citizens. It’s built to empower users with the knowledge to engage in meaningful political discourse.
What we learned
We learned the importance of user-centered design and the challenges of simplifying complex data without losing important details. We also discovered how crucial data visualization is for engagement.
What's next for DashGov
Next, we plan to expand the dashboard to include more localized data, such as regional budgets and local government project progress, further improving transparency and citizen involvement.
