Inspiration

Traditional study tools often overlook the needs of neurodivergent students. As a neurodiversity-aware team, we saw a gap in inclusive digital study tools for students with ADHD, autism, or dyslexia, these apps often did not accomodate the customizability/adaptability for all of their needs. We were motivated to build something that empowers focus and engagement for those who are often underserved in education.

What it does

Learn In Color is an inclusive web app built to support neurodivergent students, especially those with ADHD, autism, or dyslexia. It offers a soothing, distraction-free study space with features like dyslexia-friendly fonts, pastel and high-contrast themes, font size and spacing controls, and a rich-text note-taking interface. Built-in text-to-speech and voice dictation for notes, and an All Use AI Study Bot for any question. (Basically an all in one study buddy that anyone can benefit from!)

How we built it

We used React + TypeScript for the frontend, styled with Tailwind CSS and ShadCN UI for clean, accessible components. Vite+React was used for the fast frontend. Text to speech/Voice Notes Integration was utilized through the Web Speech API. AI Chatbot utilized OpenAI API. User preferences like font, theme, and study timer settings were stored locally for a personalized experience.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing customizability with simplicity for neurodivergent users (optimizing features) Ensuring accessibility for diverse needs like dyslexia, auditory processing, and visual sensitivity Integration of speech to text API (Web Speech)

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a fully functional, inclusive study platform. Integrated TTS, dictation, and theme customization into a seamless user experience Created a calming and empowering/welcome space for learners who are often overlooked by traditional edtech

What we learned

The value of inclusive design and the real impact it can have on neurodivergent students How to integrate TTS and speech recognition while maintaining app features/UI

What's next for LearnInColor

We plan to enhance speech recognition accuracy, expand language support, and introduce offline mode to make the app more reliable and accessible for students with limited internet access.
