Inspiration

With our background in Dartmouth admissions, we're all aware how byzantine the campus can seem to newcomers and veterans alike. We wanted to create an easy interface that allowed visitors and students to explore the inner working of campus with technology that's already installed on their phone.

What it does

You send the bot an image of the Dartmouth building, and using Facebook chat conversational interfaces, it walks you through activities and organizations that call that building their home. You can also ask for help, a map, Dartmouth news, or the dining menu.

How we built it

Using IBM's Watson for image recognition, we took photos from various different angles to teach Watson to recognize Dartmouth buildings from any conceivable photo that a visitor might take. One there, we parsed information about each building into chat conversations that make it easy to discover all that Dartmouth has to offer. Facebook chat allows for persistent list interfaces that let users entirely explore one aspect of the conversation tree without having to redo it for every query.
