Inspiration

Many elderly relatives want to maintain their independence at home, but families constantly worry about their safety. While traditional solutions rely on indoor surveillance cameras, these often feel intrusive and violate personal privacy. We created Darly to solve this dilemma: an ambient, privacy-first caretaking companion that uses non-invasive Ring entryway telemetry to safeguard loved ones without placing cameras inside their private living spaces.

What it does

Darly monitors natural household rhythms exclusively through exterior and entryway sensors (Ring Doorbell, contact sensors, and front porch activity):

  • Ambient Routine Learning: Learns regular daily habits (e.g., morning walk, mail check, returning home) without intrusive indoor surveillance.
  • Safety Anomaly Detection: Instantly alerts family members when routines deviate dangerously (such as an exterior door left open late at night, or no morning movement detected past usual hours).
  • Proactive, Gentle Check-ins: Replaces noisy raw motion alerts with clear, reassuring context summaries for caregivers.

How we built it

  • Ring Integration: Built on top of Ring APIs and entryway event streams (using simulated sensor feeds for comprehensive edge-case testing).
  • Context Engine: Event-processing pipeline that transforms raw motion and door triggers into daily wellness timelines.
  • Agent Architecture: Cloud-based intelligence designed to evaluate routine baselines and trigger priority notifications.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing sensitivity and noise reduction: ensuring the system reliably flags real anomalies while preventing false alarms caused by postal deliveries or random exterior movement.

What's next for Darly

Expanding cross-device support across Amazon ecosystems (ambient Alexa+ gentle voice prompts and wearable notifications), alongside predictive multi-day wellness insights.
