Inspiration

Most mainstream music platforms enforce streaming restrictions, paywalls, or skip limits on free tiers, while offering flat interfaces without real-time customization. I wanted to build an accessible music application for both desktop and mobile web that offers unlimited listening, a responsive dark UI, and audio-reactive visuals.

What it does

  • Unlimited Music Streaming: Stream audio across mobile and desktop web without playback caps or listening restrictions.
  • Dynamic Dark UI/UX: A responsive, dark-mode interface with artist album views, playlist curation, and navigation designed for both desktop and touch screens.
  • AI Mood Playlists (VibeBeats): Contextual playlist curation that serves track sequences matched to specific moods and listening vibes.
  • Interactive Audio Visualizer (BeatMap): A real-time, audio-reactive WebGL canvas visualizer that maps frequencies and beats directly to on-screen animations.
  • 3D Spatial Audio & Equalizer: Native audio processing controls including spatial sound positioning and equalizer frequency adjustments.
  • Playlist Importer: In-app utilities to import and organize external track playlists.

How we built it

  • Frontend & Architecture: Responsive web stack optimized for desktop and mobile displays with dynamic audio player state management.
  • Audio & Visual Processing: Web Audio API for custom sound filters, panning nodes, and real-time frequency analysis; WebGL/Canvas for low-latency visual frequency rendering.
  • Desktop Distribution: Packaged into a cross-platform desktop application using Electron, configured for production, and certified for distribution on the Microsoft Store.

Challenges we ran into

  • Audio & WebGL Synchronization: Processing real-time frequency data through the Web Audio API and rendering canvas visualizer frames concurrently without introducing audio stutter or UI frame drops.
  • Store Packaging & Certification: Resolving desktop dependencies and sandbox permissions to successfully pass the official Microsoft Store ingestion and security requirements.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully publishing the desktop build live on the official Microsoft Store.
  • Implementing responsive WebGL visualizers and 3D spatial audio controls that run directly in the client without external plugins.

What's next for DarkBeats

  • Offline local caching for stored tracks.
  • Enhanced mobile touch optimizations for the spatial audio control sliders.
  • Expanding AI playlist generation parameters.
