Inspiration
Inspired by the wizard's chess game from Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings, Dark Lord's Gambit puts you onto a massive chess board with giant chess pieces that obey your command. As you face off against your opponent, you'll have to dodge fireballs being thrown at you.
What it does
When you start the game, you'll be placed on your side of the chess match. When it is your turn to move, you can grab pieces and move them to checkmate the AI. As you play the game, fireballs will be launched at you. Avoid the fireballs and beat your opponent to win the game!
How we built it
We took an existing chess game that was written for a tutorial in Unity, followed it, and modified it to support VR. We then added our own unique twists to the game, such as the giant chess pieces, the AI, and the fireballs.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge we had was that we were all new to programming with Unity and working with XR. All of us had to quickly pick up how to use Unity, and we encountered many problems with learning how to use the editor. One major challenge specifically was incorporating VR interaction and collision with the chess pieces so that the user can control the components through the controllers.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- We managed to get Quest 2 to play our game!
- Going from minimal Unity experience to a full-blown prototype
- creating a VR chess environment that is as mind-blowing and immersive as wizard chess
What we learned
- Prototyping with a major time pressure
- Unity & C#
- VR incorporation
- Game design
What's next for Dark Lord's Gambit
The animation would definitely be the first thing we would add, as well as improving the collision and VR interaction between the user and the components. We would also like to add custom sound to better immerse the user into the fantasy world.
