Inspiration Dark Glade was inspired by survival video games with elements of exploration, resources gathering, crafting and danger.

What it does Dark Glade is a 3D browser survival game. Players collect wood and stone, build tools and camping equipment, deal with hunger, explore different landscapes, kill enemies and hostile animals and survive for 3 days in order to kill the Guardian.

How we built it Dark Glade is built using JavaScript and Three.js library. Our game uses procedural generation techniques for terrain, lighting, weather, day/night cycle, resources, enemies, crafting, inventory, combat and player survival. HTML and CSS provide UI including menus, controls, status bars and victory screen.

Challenges we ran into Loading external 3D models properly, keeping the player above non-flat surface of terrain, balance between enemy and animal population and difficulty of survival systems without becoming too frustrating. We should also keep the readability of the game during weather, lighting, enemies and resources events.

Accomplishments that we're proud of We are proud of the full playable loop in Dark Glade which includes objective and victory state. The game features named enemies, resource health bars, crafting and tools system, hunger, combat, weather, dynamic lighting, Guardian boss and survival through 3 days.

What we learned We have learned how to develop a real-time 3D game in browser, how to manage a game state in such game, provide good player feedback in such environment and how to fix problems associated with models, terrain, camera and time management. Also, having an objective makes the prototype significantly more interesting.

What's next for Dark Glade In the future, we would make survival strategy deeper by adding better shelter mechanics, lighting and campfire systems, improving enemies behavior, more realistic biomes and crafting options.
