Inspiration

Movie discovery today is overwhelming. Users spend more time searching than watching, receive repetitive recommendations, and rarely understand why a movie is suggested. We wanted to build an experience where AI acts as an intelligent companion rather than just another recommendation engine. That vision became DARK, an AI-powered Movie Intelligence Platform where users receive personalized, explainable recommendations and can discover movies through natural conversations with Nyx, our AI assistant.

What it does

DARK is a full-stack AI Movie Intelligence Platform that helps users discover movies smarter. It provides personalized recommendations, explains why each movie matches a user's preferences through Movie DNA and Taste Persona, enables collaborative watchlists, shows streaming availability and trailers, and offers an AI assistant called Nyx for natural-language interaction. Users can also access DARK through Slack for a seamless conversational experience.

How we built it

We built DARK using Node.js, Express.js, MongoDB, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. Movie data is powered by the TMDB API, while Google Gemini powers Nyx for intelligent reasoning and contextual conversations. The backend uses REST APIs, JWT authentication, caching, and secure middleware for scalability and performance. The application is deployed using Render and Vercel, with version control managed through GitHub.

Challenges we ran into

Designing Nyx as an AI assistant instead of a generic chatbot. Building explainable recommendations instead of simple similarity-based suggestions. Optimizing Gemini API usage while maintaining fast response times. Integrating multiple APIs without affecting performance. Building secure authentication, rate limiting, and scalable backend architecture. Extending the platform with Slack integration while keeping a single AI backend.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a production-ready AI Movie Intelligence Platform from scratch. Developed Nyx, an AI assistant capable of understanding user intent and providing contextual movie guidance. Created Movie DNA and Taste Persona for explainable recommendations. Successfully integrated Google Gemini, TMDB, and Slack into one cohesive platform. Designed a scalable backend with authentication, analytics, caching, and secure APIs. Delivered a polished, responsive, and deployable application.

What we learned

Building DARK taught us how to design AI-powered applications beyond simple chatbots. We gained practical experience with AI integration, backend architecture, API design, authentication, performance optimization, cloud deployment, and creating intuitive user experiences. Most importantly, we learned how to combine multiple technologies into a cohesive, production-ready product.

What's next for Dark

What's next for DARK Our vision is to evolve DARK into a complete AI entertainment ecosystem. Future plans include voice-based interactions with Nyx, multi-agent collaboration, real-time watch parties, deeper personalization, cross-platform integrations, smarter recommendation models, mobile applications, and support for books, TV shows, and anime. We aim to make DARK the go-to AI companion for discovering and enjoying entertainment.
