DAREOSHI — Bringing You Closer to Your “Oshi”
Inspiration
Who do you root for?
Fans often have to piece together updates from social networks, official sites, fan clubs, event pages, and scattered community posts. The information is fragmented, easy to miss, and difficult to organize around the people they genuinely care about.
DAREOSHI was created to give every fan one simple place to discover a favorite public figure, save their page, follow updates, plan around events, and connect with others who share the same enthusiasm. “Oshi” is a Japanese word for the person you passionately support. Our goal is to make that feeling understandable and accessible across languages, countries, and genres.
What it does
DAREOSHI is an unofficial fan community app for athletes, entrepreneurs, idols, VTubers, singers, gamers, actors, and other public figures.
- Search and discovery: Find public figures by name or category, or request a new page when one does not exist yet.
- My List: Save the people you support and keep them easy to revisit.
- Personalized Home: See relevant updates and recommendations from the pages in your list.
- My Calendar: Organize events, add your own entries, and configure notifications so important moments are not missed.
- Oshi Pages: View profiles, latest updates, events, and activity logs. Community members can suggest additions and corrections.
- Community Lounge: Connect with fellow fans in a shared community space designed with reporting, blocking, and clear posting rules.
- English and Japanese: The experience is designed for fans in both languages from the start.
All core features are available on the free plan. An optional monthly subscription removes advertising.
How we built it
The mobile app is built with Flutter and Dart, giving us a consistent product foundation and a clear path to expand beyond iOS. Supabase supports shared data and community features. RevenueCat manages the ad-free subscription entitlement, while Google AdMob supports the free experience.
Some community surfaces are delivered through a carefully controlled WebView. We built an explicit bridge between Flutter and the web layer for initialization, state synchronization, and user-requested deletion of device-scoped community data. We also created bilingual support, privacy, and policy pages that remain consistent with the in-app experience.
ChatGPT was part of our development workflow for product exploration, bilingual copy refinement, debugging, and implementation review. It helped us move faster, but the product decisions, safety rules, and final implementation remained deliberate and human-reviewed.
Challenges we ran into
The most difficult work happened at the boundaries between systems:
- Keeping subscription entitlement and advertising behavior consistent across launch, restore, and purchase states.
- Making Flutter and WebView navigation reliable without opening overly broad security permissions.
- Preserving community state for a low-friction experience while still providing a clear data-deletion path.
- Designing user-generated content features with reporting, blocking, moderation guidance, and privacy protections.
- Maintaining a coherent experience in English and Japanese rather than treating localization as an afterthought.
These challenges pushed us to improve logging, define stricter interfaces between layers, and test complete user journeys instead of isolated screens.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Released a real iPhone app on the App Store during the Shipaton submission period.
- Built an end-to-end fan journey: discover, save, follow, plan, contribute, and connect.
- Kept every core feature free while offering a simple, understandable ad-free subscription.
- Shipped bilingual product copy and public support/privacy pages.
- Added practical trust and safety controls for a community centered on public figures.
- Turned the idea into a live product rather than stopping at a prototype.
What we learned
We learned that community products earn trust through details: clear rules, predictable state, useful deletion controls, and honest monetization. We also learned that the fastest route to a better product is to ship a focused loop, observe where people struggle, and improve the complete experience continuously.
What's next for DAREOSHI
Next, we plan to:
- Expand to Android using the Flutter foundation.
- Improve recommendations and discovery across categories and countries.
- Strengthen event freshness, notifications, moderation, and community data quality.
- Add more localized content while preserving a consistent global experience.
- Learn from verified activation, retention, and subscription data after launch.
Our long-term vision is a place where the world’s enthusiasm can gather—where every fan can find their next “oshi,” and every positive contribution helps that person shine brighter.
