Inspiration

As young adults who hope to one day make a positive difference in the world, we started thinking of ways we could use our skills with different programming languages and frameworks to better the world around us. We then had the idea to create Dandelion. Just like a real Dandelion, our app takes a part of itself wherever it goes bringing communities together and smiles to the faces of those in its path. In a more formal sense, our program allows users to crowd source labor from willing members of the community.

What it does

Our app allows people to both reach out to their community for help and provide help. Imagine you head to a local beach on a weekend with your family. You arrive at the beach, beaming with excitement and joy just to realize the place is littered with trash. Of course you could take it upon yourself to clean up the entire area which realistically might not be possible or you could use our Dandelion app to alert members of the community. The hope is that if more people are aware of community issues, they can come together to fix it for the betterment of those residing in the area.

An alternative way our app can be used is by larger organizations who are in need of volunteers or might even be in search of ways to better their nearby community through providing volunteers to help out in the community.

How we built it

We built our app through the use of React-Native along with a Flask/SQL backend. We bridged the front and back end through the use of Axios which carried out http/https requests to the backend of our server.

Challenges we ran into

Our most challenging portion of this project was bridging the front and backend seamlessly. We thankfully were able to put our brains together and come up with a solution but with different people having different specialties it sometimes did not go according to plan.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of how the team came together. Although we had very different specialties, we were able to seamlessly blend our skills together to make the final product. Matt was able to work on the front end, Dhong was able to create a lot of our app designs, Lucy was able to create a compelling presentation for the group and Nathaniel was able to work on the backend.

What we learned

We learned diversity is a very important part of any team. Diversity in points of view, skills and of course ideas.

What's next for Dandelion

A lot :)
