Inspiration
We wanted to make something cute that would just make people happy and try something new on lens studio. During our process, we noticed our design was a pretty chunky bear, who we now lovingly refer to as "chonk bear."
What it does
The user can draw a path and watch the bear walk along that path then stop to do a little dance. Music can also be added to see what songs he can dance on beat to.
How we built it
We discussed what animals we would like to see in AR and then came up with chonk bear who became a sort of a meme. We modeled a bear to fit our ideas and then we added animations to him. We added an outline effect to make him even more cartoonish using backface culling. Then we brought the fbx into lens studio and made the animations play at the correct times and designed and added the footprint textures.
Challenges we ran into
Initially importing the file kept crashing the app, then we experiences problems with multiple bears appearing or scaling down really small which was discovered to be due to having several instances of the same animations applied. Once we got past that, there were some issues getting the correct animation to play at the correct time, instead, he would always dance rather than walk. Once that was fixed we noticed he was actually walking forward in the animation and we needed to move the root so it did not do that. Once we got through these issues he worked great!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating something we had fun with throughout the process and our collaboration at all stages of the project.
What we learned
We got a better understanding of lens studio after having almost no experience in it prior. We are a lot more comfortable with it now and look forward to creating more lenses in the future.
What's next for Dancing Bear
We hope our bear gets popular and brings smiles to many people's faces as they watch him dance all over the world!
