Inspiration

We wanted to create an interactive piece of art that reacted to the viewer in some interesting way.

What it does

Dance Buddy plays music and displays an image made of light that moves to the beat. You can press into some fabric to affect the image and make some additional noise. Step in front of Dance Buddy to start the show.

How we built it

We went through a lot of brainstorming when trying to decide what this project would be. We built the final product using PVC plastic and 80/20s as the main structure, and duct tape to hold it all together. We use a laser pointer aimed at an expertly suspended piece of acrylic connected to a speaker to create our cool music-controlled-light-effect. We have a frame made out of 80/20s with fabric stretched over it connected to a scale that, connected to an arduino, is able to play different frequencies of sound from the speaker, further influencing the laser beam. An ultrasonic sensor is used to tell if someone has stepped in front of Dance Buddy.

Challenges we ran into

Lack of inspiration. Too much inspiration. Fatigue. Confusion (idea wise).

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We did it. We stayed here for 24 hours. And we made a thing.

What's next for Dance Buddy

It will be used to bring joy to those who come across it.
