Inspiration

In Côte d’Ivoire, small-scale farmers are abundant but face major barriers accessing urban markets. Middlemen take most of the profits, while end consumers pay high prices for often imported goods. We wanted to reverse this logic by building a simple, local, and direct digital platform.

What it does

DaloaMarket is a web platform that connects local farmers in Daloa with consumers through a clean, responsive interface.

  • Farmers can publish their products with photos, prices, and available quantities.
  • Buyers can browse offers, filter by product or region, and place direct reservations.
  • A built-in messaging system allows communication before finalizing a deal.
  • The site is fully mobile-optimized and performs well even on low-bandwidth connections.

How we built it

  • Frontend: HTML5, TailwindCSS, Alpine.js
  • Backend: Supabase (authentication, database, image storage)
  • Deployment: Netlify
  • Database: PostgreSQL via Supabase
  • Mobile-friendly: responsive by design, compatible with entry-level Android phones

Challenges we ran into

  • Delivering a smooth user experience using lightweight tools (no heavy backend)
  • Ensuring data security (auth, input validation)
  • Designing an intuitive UI for users with little digital literacy
  • Building an extensible structure for future features like mobile payments or geolocation

What we learned

  • Supabase is highly effective for building fast, scalable MVPs
  • Mobile-first design is critical for rural and low-income regions
  • Early user feedback is key to refining UX and functionality

What’s next

  • Integration of an interactive farmer map using Leaflet
  • Mobile payment support (MoMo, Orange Money API)
  • Real-world deployment in the Daloa region with a local farming cooperative
  • Development of a PWA (Progressive Web App) for partial offline use
