Inspiration
Learning science often feels disconnected from real life. Many students memorize concepts without understanding how they apply to the world around them. We wanted to create a platform that starts with curiosity instead of textbooks. DailyWhy was inspired by the simple questions people ask every day, such as "Why do onions make us cry?", "Why does a fan stop working well when blocked?", or "Why doesn't paper burn when an egg is inside it?". By turning everyday observations into learning opportunities, we make STEM education more engaging, relatable, and accessible.
What it does
DailyWhy is an AI-powered STEM learning platform that helps users discover the science behind everyday life. Users can: Explore curated curiosity cards covering real-world phenomena. Ask their own questions about things they observe around them. Receive simple, beginner-friendly AI explanations. Take AI-generated multiple-choice quizzes after each explanation. Verify their understanding through interactive learning. Discover related STEM concepts and questions for deeper exploration. The platform transforms curiosity into structured learning experiences.
How we built it
We built DailyWhy as a lightweight web application focused on simplicity and accessibility. The platform combines: A curated library of curiosity cards. AI-powered question answering. Dynamic explanation generation. Automatic quiz generation to test understanding. A clean and user-friendly interface for learning. AI is used to explain STEM concepts in simple language and generate comprehension questions that reinforce learning.
Challenges we ran into
Some of the biggest challenges included: Simplifying complex STEM concepts without losing accuracy. Designing explanations that work for different age groups and learning levels. Generating quiz questions that truly test understanding instead of memorization. Creating curiosity cards that are both educational and engaging. Ensuring users stay focused on learning rather than simply reading answers.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of: Building a platform that teaches STEM through everyday curiosity. Creating a learning experience that goes beyond simple AI question answering. Developing an interactive quiz system that verifies understanding. Designing an experience that makes science feel relevant to daily life. Launching a platform with multiple curiosity cards and user-generated question support.
What we learned
Through building DailyWhy, we learned that: People learn better when education is connected to real-world experiences. Curiosity is one of the strongest drivers of learning. AI can be a powerful educational tool when used to encourage understanding rather than provide shortcuts. Interactive learning significantly improves engagement and retention. Simplicity often creates a better learning experience than overwhelming users with information.
What's next for DailyWhy
Our future roadmap includes: Personalized learning paths based on user interests. STEM achievement badges and progress tracking. Voice-based question asking and explanations. Image uploads so users can ask questions about objects they see. Support for multiple languages. Expanded curiosity card categories across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. AI-powered recommendations that connect concepts and create deeper learning journeys.
