Inspiration

We are both big fans of the New York Times mini games, we complete them every day. We also are big fans of pub quizzes so we started brainstorming fun quick mini game ideas.

What it does

Our app Shows users 3 Emojis with the option of a 4th. With that you must guess the country that the emojis describe. The 4 emojis describe the cuisine of the country, climate, wildlife and the culture. There are also optional hints to get a description of each emoji as countries can be quite niche

How we built it

The frontend uses custom hooks (usePuzzle, useCounter) to manage game state, API calls, and user progress, ensuring separation. Our backend, built with API endpoints, handles puzzle generation, answer validation, hint retrieval, and user completion tracking. The game’s core mechanics—like the lives system, hint counter, and emoji reveal—were implemented with React’s state and effect hooks for real-time interactivity. We prioritized user experience with loading states, feedback messages, and a datalist for country suggestions.

Challenges we ran into

This was our first time creating an app for reddit so it took a bit of time to read the docs and figure it out. We had some challenges getting the comments API working. Overall it was a smooth process.

What's next for Globe Glyphs

We'd like users to be able to select a difficulty as many countries will be quite difficult to guess and also expand to other categories to guess e.g. Movies, Celebrities.
