Inspiration

Daily Motivational Cat Pictures was inspired by the cuteness of cats and the stresses of daily college life. We wanted to alleviate some of that stress with motivational quotes and cats.

What it does

Every day, the website will generate a random cat picture and motivational quote from an API. Users can also sign up to a mailling list to receive the same cat and quote directly to their inbox.

How we built it

The project was split into five main tasks. The first was accessing the APIs to retrieve the cat pictures and the inspirational quotes on a daily basis. The second task was to create a React.js framework to host the website. The third task was to create the mailing list functionality through MailChimp. The fourth main task was to use UI/UX principles to design the website with Figma and implement through HTML/CSS. The final task was to set up the domain for public use.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into a few challenges during this project, but we were able to overcome them! The first major challenge was to access the API only once a day rather than every time the website was refreshed. Additionally, a major challenge was formatting the website in CSS and HTML to make it presentable and user friendly. The most surprising challenge was to pick a color for the border of the picture. It was also difficult to configure the TTL value to connect the .tech domain to our website and also to identify the port for the IP address to host from. However, after overcoming all of these challenges, we are proud of our accomplishments.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

In addition to overcoming the challenges, we're proud of creating a fun website that we enjoy using and laughing at. We're also proud of creating something that will lift people's spirits and help their mental health. We're also very proud of learning and utilizing web dev tools such as React.js and APIs.
