Inspiration

Inspired by the legendary "Florida Man" meme culture and the unpredictable chaos of internet news headlines, I wanted to create a game that captures the absurdity and humor of making terrible life decisions. The game celebrates the wild, unpredictable nature of Reddit culture itself.

What it does

Daily Life of u/ is an interactive life simulator where players embody the spirit of "Florida Man." Each day brings random events drawn from real meme culture:

  • Wrestling alligators for fun
  • Bizarre Florida adventures
  • Managing your chaotic life (health, money, sanity)
  • Trying not to become a news headline
  • 25+ unique character traits
  • 30+ meme-inspired random events

The game features dynamic forecasts powered by Reddit's API, procedurally generated events, and a survival mechanic where your choices matter.

How we built it

Tech Stack:

  • Frontend: React 18.2 + TypeScript for the game UI
  • Styling: Tailwind CSS v3 (downgraded from v4 for WebView compatibility)
  • Build Tool: Vite 6.x with custom configuration
  • Server: Hono 4.11 + @devvit/web/server for Reddit integration
  • Platform: Devvit (Reddit's custom app platform)
  • Fonts: Space Grotesk via @fontsource for retro aesthetics
  • State Management: Custom React hooks with mutable refs to prevent game freezing

Key Architecture Decisions:

  1. Built a mutable game state system (gameRef) with setTimeout chains instead of setInterval to avoid React StrictMode double-render bugs
  2. Integrated Reddit's API for dynamic weather forecasts using real subreddit data
  3. Created a modular event system with weighted randomization for gameplay variety
  4. Designed a retro-inspired UI with bright yellow (#FFDE00) backgrounds and comic-style shadows

Challenges we ran into

  1. Game Freeze Bug: React's StrictMode was calling state setters twice, causing the game to freeze. Solution: Complete rewrite using mutable refs + setTimeout chains.

  2. CSS Rendering on Reddit: Initially used Tailwind CSS v4, but it outputs CSS variables (var(--color-*)) that weren't being defined in the build output, causing all styling to disappear in Devvit's WebView. Critical fix: Downgraded to Tailwind v3 which outputs hardcoded RGB values, reducing CSS from 224KB to 30KB.

  3. Server Migration: Switched from Express to Hono framework due to Devvit runtime compatibility issues.

  4. Asset Loading: Had to replace Google Fonts CDN with local @fontsource packages due to Devvit's CSP restrictions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Fixed 5 major bugs (BGM, game freeze, monotonous content, boring forecasts, lack of humor)
  • Expanded from 10 to 25 character traits with unique gameplay effects
  • Added 30+ meme-inspired events with procedural generation
  • Successfully deployed a full React app to Reddit's Devvit platform
  • Solved critical CSS rendering issues under extreme deadline pressure
  • Created a genuinely fun, replayable experience that captures internet culture

What we learned

  • Deep understanding of React's rendering lifecycle and StrictMode behavior
  • Browser compatibility challenges with modern CSS features in embedded WebViews
  • The importance of framework version compatibility (Tailwind v4 vs v3)
  • Devvit's server architecture using Hono + @devvit/web/server
  • How to debug CSS issues at the browser level (inspecting built output)
  • Time management under hackathon pressure (submitted hours before deadline!)

What's next for Daily Life of U

  • Multiplayer leaderboards
  • Achievement system
  • More dynamic events based on trending Reddit posts
  • Enhanced animations and sound effects
  • Expansion beyond Florida Man (other regional stereotypes)
  • Save/load game states
