Inspiration
Many older people live alone, and their families worry whether they took their medicine, ate, or feel unwell. Phone calls are easy to miss, and a call every day can feel like an interrogation.
What it does
Daily Check-in is a simulated Alexa+ skill. Alexa greets the older person warmly and chats with them about sleep, medicine, how they feel, food and water, and anything they need. She can answer by speaking, typing or tapping. Alexa replies with kindness to each answer, as a friend would. The family then sees a simple dashboard with a green, amber or red status, a short summary, and a history of recent check-ins. If something looks worrying, like a missed medicine or feeling unwell, it is flagged clearly.
How we built it
A single HTML, CSS and JavaScript web app. It uses the browser's speech recognition and speech synthesis for voice, keyword matching to understand natural answers, and local storage for the check-in history. I'm a beginner, and I built it with the help of an AI assistant.
Challenges we ran into
Making the conversation feel natural and not like a form, and designing large, simple controls for older users.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm a beginner, and I went from zero to a working project in about a day. I'm most proud of these things: It feels like a real conversation. Alexa greets Grandma by the time of day, replies warmly to every answer, and "types" for a moment like a real person. It isn't just a form with buttons. It understands natural answers. Grandma can speak, type or tap, and phrases like "I forgot" or "a bit dizzy" are understood. It helps both sides. Grandma gets a simple, large-text experience, and her family gets a clear green, amber or red summary so they know when to step in. It's designed with care. I used big buttons, readable text and gentle wording for older users, and I added a clear note that it's a simulation and not a medical device. I finished and shipped it as a beginner, on a tight deadline, using AI help to learn along the way.
What we learned
How voice interfaces work, and how small touches like warm replies and a short "typing" pause change the feel.
What's next for Daily Check-in
Connect to a real Alexa+ skill, understand free-form speech with a language model, and send real alerts to family by message.
