Inspiration

A recent event led me to realise how games aren't just something people "play" with, but are used as coping mechanisms and for respite. I ventured out of my comfort zone to try and build a daily puzzle game people can pickup immediately and will enjoy playing. My aim is it sparks joy, even if just for a few minutes each day, and if any players are going through something, I hope it helps provides that little bit of respite.

What it does

A daily puzzle game where people associate words to different images. The player has four guesses, and with each guess they unlock another picture and letter clues to help decipher the answer. The letter clues are a traffic light system showing which letters are applicable and which are in the wrong location.

How we built it

The application is built using Flutter. I used various AI tools such as Cline, as well as local LLM models for both coding, image and video generation.

Challenges we ran into

Drastically underestimating the review time on new app submissions. I originally built for Android without realising there is a 14 day review period for new app submissions (thanks Rhys for pointing this out) and had to quickly build for iOS.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Feedback is good at the moment, and the application seems very sticky. It genuinely seems to tick the box of "daily" puzzle game.

What we learned

A daily puzzle game is only as good as the puzzles. The game mechanics, and everything else that comes with building a game, is just a means to the game. If the puzzles are too easy or too difficult, people won't enjoy it.

What's next for Daily Charades

Focus on growth and adding requested features such as accounts, badges, custom leaderboards.
