Inspiration
I develop puzzle games professionally, working with top mobile publishers including Voodoo and Lion Studios. I test and iterate on puzzle mechanics monthly at that level.
I studied the most successful puzzle games on Reddit, watched how players use the comments to challenge each other, share scores, and discuss strategy.
Mobile puzzle games have the best mechanics but no real social layer. Reddit is the perfect platform for a score-based puzzle game because the social layer is already there: players can challenge each other, discuss strategies, and react to leaderboards in the comments, or by creating a tournament post or score challenge post.
What it does
Daily Blocks is a competitive block puzzle built natively on Reddit. Players drop blocks, clear lines, and chase the highest score. There are three ways to compete: an open score challenge where anyone can call out a rival's score, weekly tournaments open to the community, and closed 8-player 48-hour brackets where only the best survives. All of it plays out in the comments, where players talk strategy, trash-talk scores, and settle rivalries.
How we built it
Built natively on Devvit using Phaser as the game engine. I used AI to help with coding, but every feature and use case was tested thoroughly across 3 accounts, on both PC and mobile.
Challenges we ran into
When navigating from one post to another, leftover JS state from the previous post gets mixed in, causing the UI to show mixed elements and wrong data.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Learning several Devvit features, and adding a social layer to an already highly competitive and addictive game.
What we learned
Devvit is a powerful tool that can be used to build a genuinely good user experience around Reddit.
What's next for Daily Blocks
More Polish. Getting players to interact more around their scores, and creating more types of tournaments.
