Inspiration

I wanted to build an app that I would actually use myself.

There are countless fitness apps promising things like “six-pack abs in 30 days.” I wanted something different: a simple way to train abs and core consistently without following a fixed program or spending time deciding what exercises to do.

That became Daily Abs Workout: 8 Min Core — choose your focus and difficulty, shuffle a workout, and start training.

How I built it

The app is built with React Native, Expo, and TypeScript. Workouts are generated based on the selected core focus and difficulty level, and the workout player guides the user through exercises, rest periods, timers, videos, and audio cues.

I also integrated RevenueCat for subscriptions and the paywall, with purchases handled through Apple App Store and Google Play.

What I learned

I have over 14 years of web development experience, but this is my first mobile app. One of my goals was specifically to move beyond web development and learn how to build and release real mobile products.

I learned a huge amount about React Native and Expo, but also about everything surrounding mobile development: testing on different platforms, subscriptions, store configuration, releases, and getting an app ready for actual users.

Challenges

The biggest surprise was how much work happens outside the actual app development.

Getting subscriptions, products, permissions, credentials, and the paywall working correctly across Apple and Google was much more complicated and time-consuming than I expected. RevenueCat helped simplify a lot of this, but there were still many moving parts.

I was also surprised by how involved the App Store and Google Play release processes are compared with deploying a web application.

Building Daily Abs Workout taught me that creating the app is only one part of shipping a mobile product — getting everything around it working reliably is a project of its own.
