Inspiration
The journey of creating Dada Connect was born out of a pressing need to address the silent struggles faced by women, particularly in rural Kenyan villages. For many women in these communities, the reality of violence and sexual assault is not just a statistic but a harsh daily experience. The numbers are staggering: countless cases of gender-based violence go unreported, leaving victims without the support they need to heal and seek justice.
This issue was brought into sharp focus after hearing the story of Amina, a young woman from a small village in Kenya who endured unimaginable trauma. Without access to support groups, therapy, or even a safe space to voice her pain, Amina’s cries for help went unheard. Her story, unfortunately, is not unique. The lack of accessible mental health resources and safe spaces for women in similar situations inspired us to create Dada Connect — a platform dedicated to empowering women, offering support, and providing a sense of community.
What it does
Dada Connect is an inclusive online community hub specifically designed for women. The platform has two core features:
Gemini-Powered Chatbot:
Our chatbot is more than just a digital assistant; it's a compassionate companion. Powered by Gemini AI, it provides empathetic support to victims of violence and sexual assault, offering encouraging advice, practical steps, and information about available resources. The chatbot can also translate messages into Swahili, ensuring that language is not a barrier to receiving help. Whether you need someone to listen or a guide to the next steps, our AI assistant is here to help 24/7. Anonymous Community Forum:
At the heart of Dada Connect is a safe and anonymous space where women can freely share their stories, seek advice, and connect with others who understand their experiences. The forum fosters open discussions, providing a platform for women to support one another and build a strong sense of sisterhood. It's a place where no one is judged, and every voice is heard.
How we built it
Building Dada Connect was both a challenging and rewarding experience. Here's an overview of our journey:
We developed the platform using Flask, a lightweight Python web framework, to manage our backend services. The Gemini AI chatbot was integrated using the Google Generative AI API, allowing it to provide empathetic and multilingual support. For the front-end, we utilized HTML, CSS (Tailwind CSS), and JavaScript, creating a clean, user-friendly interface. We also leveraged Socket.IO to enable real-time interactions within the anonymous community forum, ensuring a smooth and responsive user experience.
Challenges we ran into
No project is without its hurdles, and Dada Connect was no exception:
Ensuring Data Privacy: We wanted to make sure that women could share their stories without fear of being identified. This required implementing strong privacy measures and making the forum entirely anonymous. Building an Empathetic AI: Training the Gemini chatbot to respond with empathy and understanding was a challenge. It was crucial that the chatbot not only provided accurate information but also did so in a way that was kind and supportive. Language Barriers: Translating the chatbot’s responses to Swahili in a way that maintained the original message's tone and empathy was a complex task. We had to fine-tune the translations to ensure they were both accurate and compassionate.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully integrating a Gemini-powered chatbot that offers real-time, empathetic support and can seamlessly translate messages into Swahili. Creating a safe, anonymous community forum where women feel comfortable sharing their experiences without fear of judgment. Building an intuitive and accessible user interface that ensures even those with limited tech experience can navigate the platform easily. Providing a multilingual support system, making our platform inclusive and accessible to a wider audience.
What we learned
Throughout this project, we learned the importance of combining technology with empathy. It’s one thing to build a chatbot, but it’s another to create one that understands the delicate needs of its users. The journey taught us how to:
