Inspiration
D9RK was inspired by classic JRPGs like Final Fantasy Record Keeper and Brave Exvius, combined with Reddit's community-driven gameplay. We wanted to create a lightweight RPG where Redditors can collect heroes, battle bosses, and progress together directly inside Reddit.
What it does
D9RK is a Reddit-based RPG where players recruit unique Snoo heroes, build teams, fight monsters, cast powerful abilities, earn rewards, and participate in community raid events. Progress is tied to a player's Reddit identity, creating a persistent RPG experience inside Reddit.
How we built it
We built D9RK using Reddit Devvit, React, Phaser, and TypeScript. Character assets, battle effects, and game systems were designed specifically for a web-based experience that runs directly within Reddit communities.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was adapting traditional RPG mechanics to the Reddit platform while keeping the experience responsive and lightweight. We also had to balance game complexity with the limitations of a browser-based embedded environment.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of creating a playable RPG experience entirely within Reddit, complete with custom Snoo heroes, battle systems, progression mechanics, and a foundation for future raid content and community events.
What we learned
We learned how powerful Devvit can be for building interactive experiences, how to integrate game frameworks into Reddit applications, and how to design social gameplay around existing Reddit communities.
What's next for D9RK
Our next steps include multiplayer raid bosses, hero summoning, equipment systems, seasonal events, subreddit-specific leaderboards, and expanding the roster of collectible Snoo heroes into a full Reddit RPG universe.
