Inspiration

Everyone says we want to help the environment, but at the same time, we are the same people who use single-use items at home and do not participate in community cleanups unless it was offered for a volunteer opportunity at your high school once a year. To a certain degree this is no one’s fault because it raises the question “What products can we use instead?” and “When and where are these cleanups?”

We cannot expect to know all this information unless there was something that told us all of this. What if there was a website that had it all?

D0NaughtWaste is a website that has all the information you will need to make a difference in the community. It provides us equity in taking the responsibility of the planet into our own hands. One member of our team is an eagle scout and the scout motto is “Do a good turn daily” which gave us the inspiration for the photo-sharing idea where the whole point is for someone to do a good turn daily for the environment.

What it does

“D0NaughtWaste” is a website that spreads awareness of the exponentially growing problems of plastic pollution and aims to promote a 0 waste way of living. Naught is an old-time English word that also means 0/nothing which represents bringing it back to the old time with less waste.

This website is all about community growth that centers around saving the environment in a virtual/physical way.

There will also be a page that has news about plastic pollution to be more aware of the problems.

A page that has local community cleanups that people can participate in and learn more about.

Finally, we have a products page that has alternatives to single-use everyday items that use amazon smile links and these links will directly benefit a beach cleanup nonprofit if they purchase using that link.

How we built it

We used Wix Velo to make everything from the actual website to the databases. Additionally, we implemented California’s Coastal API which allows users to learn more information about different cleanup sites.

Challenges we ran into

While building the website, we ran into some problems connecting the California Coastal API to our website. When we tried retrieving information from the site, we were thrown by many errors that didn’t allow us to show the user information about the cleanup sites. However, after reading various documents and doing research, we were able to fix the problem.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our accomplishments were that we were able to create a website with multiple tabs with different information about plastic pollution. We were able to upload google maps onto our site that used an API to show local beach cleanups in our area. We used a database to also allow us to search through a database for a specific location. We were also able to use specific design animations like hover in order to display text and images and make our website look smooth.

What we learned

During our process of creating this website, we learned many things. We learned more about website design where less space is more with the idea of negative space making our website look more minimalist. We also learned how to implement APIs into our website which allows for a more interactive website.

What's next for D0NaughtWaste

The next step for D0NaughtWaste is to make a mobile app for people to check community cleanups on their phones and to upload the good-turn daily photos on the app itself.
